I recently had a restless night due to shortness of breath, which made it difficult for me to lie down. After sitting up, the breathing became better. Needless to say, I got little or no sleep that night. Even after being overwhelmed by sleep, the difficulty breathing triggered a powerful reflex that woke me. This breathing reflex is crucial, as it helps ensure that the body receives oxygen and eliminates carbon dioxide even when not fully conscious.
